In short, requiring the update screen is my form of lite copy protection. Or to put it more accurately a share-deterrent.
Generally many programs have some form of copy protection whether it is a license key, online account requirement, or some sort of downloader for the app. In my experience these hurt the legitimate customer's experience and the pirate has a better experience. I instead opted for always checking for updates at launch. If you are a legitimate user you can simply download the latest update. Non-legitimate users will be forced to see the screen and have to wait for whoever their source is.
